About Swahili recordings

Swahili is written in the Latin alphabet with standard spelling. A verb is written as one word that carries the person, tense and object (ninakupenda, "I love you"), so one misheard syllable changes who did what; check verbs in passages that matter. Tanzanian Swahili and formal speech are usually closest to the written standard.

Checking a Swahili transcript

How to transcribe a Swahili recording

  1. Upload the file (up to 5 GB) or paste a link from YouTube, TikTok, Facebook or another platform.
  2. Keep Swahili as the spoken language (or auto-detect), add a translation if you want one, and pay once.
  3. Download the Swahili transcript as plain text, text with timestamps and SRT subtitles.

An honest note on accuracy

Automatic speech recognition has seen far less recorded Swahili than English or Spanish, so expect more mistakes in names, place names and specialist terms, especially in noisy recordings. Clear speech close to the microphone gives the best result. If a paid file cannot be transcribed at all, you are refunded automatically.

Translate Swahili audio into English or another language

Choose a translation language before paying and you get two versions: the original Swahili transcript and a line-by-line translation, both as TXT and as SRT with the same timings. That makes it easy to check the translation against the original, or to publish subtitles in both languages.

Questions

Does it work with Kenyan Sheng?

Sheng and English mixed into Kenyan Swahili are transcribed as spoken, but slang is harder than standard Swahili. Tanzanian Swahili and formal speech give the cleanest results.

Does it work for Swahili from Congo or Uganda?

Yes, but expect more corrections than for Tanzanian or Kenyan Swahili: Congolese and Ugandan Swahili use different vocabulary and mix in French or English. Leave the language on auto-detect if long passages switch to French or English.

How accurate is Swahili transcription?

Usable for clear speech, with more corrections than in English or Spanish. Speech models have heard far less Swahili, so names, place names, numbers and specialist terms are where to look first. Background music, overlapping voices and phone-line audio make it harder still.

Can I translate Swahili audio to English?

Yes. Pick English (or any of 141 other languages) as the translation language before paying. You get the original Swahili transcript and the translation, both as TXT and SRT.

What if the recording mixes Swahili and English?

Leave the spoken language on auto-detect. Each part is written in the language it is spoken in, so English sentences stay in English instead of being forced into Swahili.

Is Swahili supported as well as English?

It is supported, but less recorded Swahili exists for training speech models, so the transcript usually needs more checking than an English one. The price is the same, and a file that fails entirely is refunded automatically.
