About Tamil recordings

Tamil is written in Tamil script. Spoken Tamil differs a lot from written Tamil, and Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil differ too; the transcript follows the speech. Tamil mixed with English (Tanglish) keeps English words in English.

How to transcribe a Tamil recording

  1. Upload the file (up to 5 GB) or paste a link from YouTube, TikTok, Facebook or another platform.
  2. Keep Tamil as the spoken language (or auto-detect), add a translation if you want one, and pay once.
  3. Download the Tamil transcript as plain text, text with timestamps and SRT subtitles.

Written in Tamil, not in Latin letters

Your transcript comes back in Tamil, the script Tamil is normally written in, not as a romanised approximation. The SRT file is plain UTF-8 text, so the characters display correctly in YouTube Studio, VLC, Premiere Pro and other modern players and editors.

An honest note on accuracy

Automatic speech recognition has seen far less recorded Tamil than English or Spanish, so expect more mistakes in names, place names and specialist terms, especially in noisy recordings. Clear speech close to the microphone gives the best result. If a paid file cannot be transcribed at all, you are refunded automatically.

Translate Tamil audio into English or another language

Choose a translation language before paying and you get two versions: the original Tamil transcript and a line-by-line translation, both as TXT and as SRT with the same timings. That makes it easy to check the translation against the original, or to publish subtitles in both languages.

Questions

Is spoken Tamil written as spoken?

Yes. Colloquial Tamil is transcribed as it sounds, so it can differ from formal written Tamil.

How accurate is Tamil transcription?

Usable for clear speech, with more corrections than in English or Spanish. Speech models have heard far less Tamil, so names, place names, numbers and specialist terms are where to look first. Background music, overlapping voices and phone-line audio make it harder still.

Can I translate Tamil audio to English?

Yes. Pick English (or any of 141 other languages) as the translation language before paying. You get the original Tamil transcript and the translation, both as TXT and SRT.

What if the recording mixes Tamil and English?

Leave the spoken language on auto-detect. Each part is written in the language it is spoken in, so English sentences stay in English instead of being forced into Tamil.

Will the Tamil transcript be in Tamil?

Yes. The text is written in Tamil, the way Tamil is normally written, not transliterated into Latin letters.

Is Tamil supported as well as English?

It is supported, but less recorded Tamil exists for training speech models, so the transcript usually needs more checking than an English one. The price is the same, and a file that fails entirely is refunded automatically.
